چکیده

OVERLAY MULTICAST FOR REAL-TIME DISTRIBUTED SIMULATION This report provides a top-level architecture for an overlay multicast service in support of distributed real-time virtual simulations over an open network environment. The top-level architecture for the overlay protocol was developed based on key concepts identified in the laboratory performance studies, the analytical model, and the studies of live simulations. The proposed protocol is called the Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework Overlay Multicast Relay Protocol (XOMR). The XOMR provides overlay multicast message relay services to support many-to-many communications in the very dynamic environment of distributed real-time virtual simulation. (See Appendix B for definition of overlay multicast.) Appendix A includes results from demonstration of the prototype protocol based on the top-level architecture. The results demonstrate that overlay multicast service is a viable mechanism to meet the demands of communications messaging for distributed real-time virtual simulation. A message traffic generator and test environment was developed for use in performance evaluation of a prototype protocol used to demonstrate feasibility for use of overlay multicast to support distributed real-time simulation.

Performance Evaluation of the XMSF Overlay Multicast Prototype

Growing demand for use of Internet/Web-based services in large scale real-time distributed virtual simulation (RT-DVS) and other real-time applications is fueling extensive interest in overlay multicast protocols. These applications require many-to-many multicast services that are not available as an open Internet service today and are not likely to be offered as an Internet-wide service in the...

Enabling Real-Time Distributed Virtual Simulation over the Internet Using Host-Based Overlay Multicast

Many-to-many multicast transmission is an essential network capability for scalable distributed simulation. The many open issues that make network-layer multicast impractical over the Internet today are likely to continue to be insurmountable and to prevent deployment in a manner that will meet the Quality of Service (QoS) and many-to-many multicast needs of real-time distributed virtual simula...

An Agent Architecture for Network Support of Distributed Simulation Systems

Continued research into distributed agent-based systems and evolving web based technologies are opening up tremendous possibilities for the deployment of large scale and highly extensible and flexible simulation systems. However, the question remains as to how well agent and web based simulation systems can use underlying network protocols. This is especially true for complex distributed simula...

OSMOSIS: Scalable Delivery of Real-Time Streaming Media in Ad-Hoc Overlay Networks

Ad-hoc overlay networks are increasingly used for sharing static bulk content but their promise for scaling the delivery of on-demand, realtime content is yet to be tapped. In this paper, we show that overlay networks could be used efficiently to distribute popular real-time streaming media on-demand to a large number of clients. We propose and evaluate OSMOSIS a cache-and-relay end-system mult...

A Dynamic Mechanism for Distributed Optimization of Overlay Multicast Tree

To enhance the performance of overlay multicast networks, the overlay multicast tree should be optimized. This optimization problem is a minimum diameter, degree-limited spanning tree (MDDLST) problem which is known to be NP-Hard. We present a new scheme to optimize an overlay multicast tree dynamically. Our algorithm can adapt the tree structure to the dynamic membership and network situation....
